What Is BOTOX®?

BOTOX® is a purified neuromodulator that temporarily relaxes targeted muscles by limiting the nerve signals that cause repeated contractions. While widely known for cosmetic applications, BOTOX® has also become an effective treatment in dentistry for addressing TMJ-related discomfort, teeth grinding, and facial muscle tension.

At Legacy Dental Care, our Blaine dentists use BOTOX® to help improve both day-to-day comfort and appearance. Dr. Nermin Rizk is a member of the American Academy of Facial Esthetics (AAFE) and an AAFE Certified BOTOX® Provider. This advanced training allows Dr. Rizk to safely and effectively provide facial esthetic and therapeutic BOTOX® treatments.

Since dentists have extensive knowledge of facial anatomy and muscle function, they are uniquely qualified to administer BOTOX® in ways that support oral health and facial balance. Treatment can be minimally invasive, typically taking only a short amount of time with little to no downtime afterward.

What Are the Dental Benefits of BOTOX® Treatment?

BOTOX® injections offer several important benefits for patients struggling with chronic jaw tension, teeth grinding, and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain. Repeated clenching and grinding can strain the jaw muscles and joints, potentially leading to headaches, facial soreness, tooth wear, and difficulty chewing.

For patients with TMD/TMJ symptoms, BOTOX® treatment may help relax overactive jaw muscles and reduce tension surrounding the temporomandibular joints. Many patients experience decreased jaw discomfort, fewer headaches, and improved comfort after treatment.

BOTOX® injections can also help patients with bruxism by reducing the force of clenching and grinding. When combined with treatments such as a nightguard, BOTOX® may help protect teeth from excessive wear and lessen strain on the jaw muscles.

Some patients also appreciate the cosmetic benefits of treatment. Chronic clenching can enlarge the jaw muscles and create a broader jawline. Relaxing these muscles with BOTOX® injections may help create a slimmer facial appearance while improving comfort at the same time.

Who Is a Candidate for BOTOX® Dental Treatment?

Many adults who experience chronic jaw discomfort or facial muscle tension may be candidates for dental BOTOX® treatment. You may be a candidate if you experience:

Patients should be in good overall health and have realistic expectations about potential results. During a consultation, Dr. Rizk and our dental team can review your symptoms and goals to determine whether BOTOX® treatment is right for you.

What Does the Dental BOTOX® Treatment Entail?

Dental BOTOX® treatment is normally a quick, minimally invasive procedure that can often be completed in less than 30 minutes. Before treatment begins, Dr. Rizk can identify the muscles contributing to your symptoms.

Using a very fine needle, small amounts of BOTOX® are carefully injected into targeted facial or jaw muscles. Most patients experience only mild discomfort, and anesthesia is typically unnecessary. There is generally little to no downtime, allowing most individuals to return to normal activities immediately afterward.

In most cases, results develop gradually as the muscles begin to relax. Many patients notice improvement within several days, with full results appearing within one to two weeks.

How Long Do Dental BOTOX® Results Last?

The effects of dental BOTOX® treatment are usually temporary but long-lasting for many patients. In most cases, results remain noticeable for approximately three to four months, although this can vary depending on the patient and the treatment area. During this time period, patients receiving BOTOX® for their TMJ disorder treatment or bruxism often experience relief from jaw tension, headaches, and clenching.

As muscle activity gradually returns, patients may choose to schedule maintenance treatments to preserve their results. Dr. Rizk and our dentists can evaluate your response to treatment during follow-up visits and recommend the ideal timing for future appointments.
